GTI 16v Running issues
« on: 16 January 2013, 22:21 »
Hi, this is my first post on here and unfortunately its one of problems and needing help  (I promise I will post nice things when this is sorted  )

Basically, I bought a 1997 GTI 16v and picked it up Monday. The car run perfectly on my test drive and for the next 150 - 200 miles. Then out of the blue I started her up and she seemed to be jolting or hiccuping as such (technical terms yay) as I was driving. She was fine past 3000 revs if neutral but under driving conditions the problem returned.

I have done a search on here for possible fixes and I found a lot of info about the 8v version but nothing on the 16v.

I have checked for a missfire by removing the ht leads one by one while the car was running and they all made an effect to the way the engine was running meaning they were all sparking fine.

Also the car was bought from a dealer with a 3 month warranty provided by RAC but I think I was screwed over as the warranty booklet stated the warranty was for cars up to 10 years old and under 100000 miles (mine is 15 years old and at 114000). He also put the car through an MOT which it passed and has no advisories! So can anyone also shed some light on my rights in terms of getting the car sorted by them.

Thanks in advance for any help

Could be a coilpack issue,  common failure point on these.

Ah ok thanks. Is there any way I can check if it is faulty or not with a multi meter at all?
