Mk2 8v Gearbox oil
« on: 23 July 2005, 15:07 »
Hi Guys

how often should the gearbox oil be changed? Can anyone recommend any gearbox oil?

Also i am missing the plug on to the of gear box, I ordered one from VW Part no 02A 301 115 A and it appears to be the wrong one.

Any ideas?

Cheers

just put what it says in your hand book in, i think its sae80. Dont go for anything fancy as gearboxes can be a bit touchy and may not work properly (synchromeshes and stuff) if you dont use the right oil.

Whatever you do dont put oil in the plastic cap thing you are missing thats where the clutch and flywheel are, that caps not mega important so dont worry too much if its missing.

You drop the oil from the big allen key screw on the bottom of the diif and fill it from the same type of screwplug on the passenger side, with the wheel off. If you havent already got one, gsf sell the big allen key required, its not too pricey.

(ok for the record and others with less common sence reading this i didnt and you shouldnt!)

yeah i know the plug is at the bottom should have one of those tools, no probs. Been told filling is either done via speedo cable or there is a filling the plug ur talkin about... just under 2L's??

Yes that filling plug is like i say on the side of the box, just near the circular cap with the vw sign on it, on the passenger side. If your car is a post 1987 model you just fill through this hole until it starts coming out, on older ones you fill unil it starts coming out then stick a certain amount more in through the speedo hole!

Bad move putting oil in the flywheel hole, you could seriously knacker your clutch doin that mate!!!
