Front brake disc/pad change help!
« on: 14 January 2013, 15:35 »
Hi again.

Whilst doing tie rod ends I decided to change discs and pads too as i've done the back ones before but this is a first doing the front.

I found it easy enough, push back piston, new pads in undo disc retaining screw, take off disc.... but then I'm struggling.

For some reason when I put the new disc on and tighten the retaining screw the disc is still loose, doesn't sit nice and flush/still like the old discs. I put the wheel back on the first side I did and it's catching slightly though I can still turn the wheel with 1 finger. Is this normal?

The second side I tried to tighten the retaining screw right up shearing the thing off! So now I have half the screw stuck.

Any ideas how to get this out?

Drill a small hole through the middle of the bolt, then use an easy-out. Or very carefully centre punch the centre of the bolt and drill it out with a 5mm drill.
What car/model is it?
When you say it's catching, do you know what is catching on what? It's normal for the pads to lightly scrape the disc once the pistons have initially pushed the pads back towards the disc.

It's gone from bad to a whole lot worse.

Somehow now i've managed to strip the thread inside the hub where the allen bolts for the caliper screw into so the allen bolt just spins and won't tighten the caliper up.

New hub time? Any idea how to change it?

If its the guide pins the caliper slides on itll be new hub unfortunately.

Sure at 110TDI hubs will be size dependant (fixed carrier) so make sure right hub for size of disc

Is it an easy job to do?

For the moment the other guide pin is in solid, the dodgy one is as tight as it will go before it slips with tons of thread lock. I've been out and give it some stick and came home alive and the caliper is still solid so as a temporary fix it seems ok.

Any guides for fitting a hub?

The two in the caliper? Or the ones that just hold the disc in place?

Retaining screws on the disc......serve no help apart from holding disc in 1 place.

Ah.

That's not really my problem now, ive done without it but i've damaged the thread in one of the caliper bolts so it doesn't tighten as much as it should. Caliper is still on solid though.
