Running rich topic again:(
« on: 14 January 2013, 14:06 »
Hi I was just wondering what I can do on my own to remedy this. My friend used his vag on the car and there are no faults that came up. Still the car is running rich...:(

I was wondering if there is any way I can adjust the mixture myself to at least improve the fule economy.

I have replaced the dizzy, leads, plugs (all recently) and the injection flange mount (earlier last year).

Still running rich.....

I suppose the only way is to take it to the garage and let them adjust it???(wonder what that will cost me...:()

Which engine code? What is "too rich"....

VAG COM log files??

Running rich can be due to a few things.....
First check if temperature for coolant makes sense (i.e. compare ECU VAGCOM read out with dash).....

How do you know it's running rich?

Could be crap injector/injectors.

Start it up, rev it then turn off while revs are up and see if you got a wet plug.

aam 1.8. i believe it is running rich because cutting out on startup and almost failed emisiions on last mot. now fuel economy has reduced by about 2l/100km.

start from the beginning then....

didn't you have some issue with it a while ago? can't remember details....
2l/100km does not need automatically its running rich...

how does it run otherwise??

this car used to do 6.8l/100km on a motirway run on average. it now does over 8 or 9 on average.

i have changed rocker cover gasket, gearbox oil (auto) tranny filter, ignition coil, spark plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and ht leads, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, alternator belt, mid exhaust and back box. i changed the injection flange mount
as well. and engine mounts and some breasther and vacuum hoses

before i touched the car had good fuel economy as mentioned above. now is crap.

if i had just continued to drive it but no wanted it looked after.

took for mot and they said that running too rich fuel air ratio not good grtting too much fuel. byt they dont do repairs

vagcom shows no faults. done 2 days ago.

yay...runs lumpy on startup and some white smoke not realated to temperature as there on warm days as well. runs rough at intersections but once up to speed is ok. acceleration ok.

mechanic will have field day with it.

is the ignition timing correct?!

you need to put ecu to setup mode with vag com.... then adjust ignition correctly....

sounds more like temperature sensor, or possibly leaking injector(s) to me.  Can't see what ignition timing has to do with mixture, unless its not igniting the mixture.
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
