How do I figure out which top coil size?

A front coil spring has snapped on the Golf. It's a GTI 8V. Can a complete numpty novice change this easily enough?  I don't have air tools.  Just a normal spanner set.

Also, how can I tell which replacement spring I need? Don't the inner diameter top coil sizes differ on the mk3 dependent on age? I think they changed late 1994. Mine was first registered in Feb 1995 but I have a sneaky suspicion it might be an older car eg the aerial is on the front wing rather than the roof.....  Where do I measure this?  Do I need to take the shock and spring off?  I know I can get different top plates if I buy the wrong spring, but wanted to be right first time lol

I've a Haynes manual at a friends house that I need to get back so hope it has a decent guide. I also need to get a pair of coil spring compressors.

Just phone up a local motor factors with your reg number and they will get what you need. To change spring you will need spring compressors, a good 1/2 inch socket set, allan key and dogleg spanner for the top nut. Its pretty easy but all dependant on the tools you have.

don't rely on motor factors knowing.... vw fitted all sorts in 1995 (and possibly other years)

my 2 1995 cars had the following differences (both are/were build dates)
early 95 - later front springs, 280mm discs, wing aerial and round repeaters
mid 95 had - early front springs - 288mm discs - roof aerial and square repeaters

I would use the later springs as you have a much larger choice (you can get them which lower and extra 10mm if needed) and swap the lot over
