cost of timing chain on the GTI?
« on: 13 January 2013, 11:52 »
I was wondering whether anyone knows how much the timing chain costs for the GTI MK6?  I am approaching 90K km and want to prepare myself for it...

I'm not an expert, but they should last longer than 60,000 miles, possibly even the life of the car! Belts are changed every 4/5 years or 60,000 miles. I'm sure those with greater knowledge will be along to correct me.

Guessing there will be some kind of tensioner that will need replacing?

Seat did my Leon FR last summer, as well as the water pump for £380.

An indi would do it a bit cheaper but the belt costs about £200 itself I think

Is that the new E888 engine with chain that's in the MK6?

Someone told me as it was a chain not a belt it wouldn't need replacing? Or was this the wrong information?!

Renewed the belt on my Leon TDI a month or so ago. It was treated to a full service, all filters and fluid change was an expensive month in parts alone. :lipsrsealed:
IIRC, Belts by itself was about £40, belt kit inc belt and tensioners and guides was about £100, water pump was about £60. All genuine parts from VW TPS.

Chains don't need changing, but an eye should be kept on them! As far as I'm aware there is no change intervals for a chain, as there is for a belt, which degrade over time!
