Mk6 Gti Engine Compared To Mk5 Gti
« on: 11 January 2013, 23:40 »
Picked up My new mk6 gti today, had a look under the hood today, took the engine cover off, and the actual engine looks very diffrent to the mk5 gti 2.0tfsi, for example, the pcv looks diffrent? the fuel pump is in diffrent position?
is there alot of diffrence to the engines?
cheers steve x

Completely different engine.
HPFP wear issues sorted, timing chain instead of belt, cross bolted main bearings, stronger engine, more powerful, torquier, cleaner, more efficient, different turbo.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Not sure about the engine being stronger, it may be more efficient. Makes you wonder why the ED 35 used the MK5 engine ie a detuned version of the R.

Err...it is.
The Mk5 engine doesn't have cross bolted main bearings IIRC.
The EA888 is the new generation of engine...capable of far higher outputs on standard internals.

I'm guessing it wasn't viable to develop a mid-state of tune version of the EA888 for the limited run Ed35 when there was a K04 version of the Mk5 engine sitting, all developed.

I'm sure the new Mk7 R will have a bigger turbo version of the EA888 Mk6 engine....as I believe the new S3 has.

Yes they do sadly.
Not as commom as the mk5 as its an improved system but they are starting to crop up on some of the cars.
If you do a search for my 'oil leak' thread it explains it there.

As for the engine strength yes its stronger as I have the design info documents about the engine in them they compare them to the mk5 engine and explain why and the difference.

The ed35 used the engine it did as it was already a production engine, tooled for and already produced for the
S3 and cupra so was also type approved (a long very long and expensive process) . A simple parts bin special made sense.

The new s3 is a derivative of the ea888 but is advanced again, you can read about.that engines design on Audi.co.UK website.
