Crunchy 1st gear???

Hi,

1st gear on my 16v has started to make a horrible crunchy/grinding noise. It happens as soon I've disengaged the clutch and start to move off. All the other gears are ok. Any suggestions? Can I simply replace 1st gear or should I just spunk some cash on a second had gearbox??

Could anybody recommend a good recon company??

Was just about to make a thread similar to this.. My second gear does it occasionally (not very often). Does this happen everytime for you?

The 1st gear issue sounds like the gear has gone and either a gearbox re-build or swapout is required. The second gear issue (from the 2nd post) is a weak syncromesh on second. This issue can be fixed by a re-build or can be improved and in somecases eliminated by replacing the gearbox oil and/or adding an additive. I would personally suggest changing the oil for some 75/90 synthetic oil and add a tube of molyslip. I guess the total cost of the oil & additive is about £25 and it's quick & easy to do. I think there is a guide on here somewhere and all you need is a sump plug socket. It transforms a gearbox.

So I should try changing the gearbox oil and adding an additive to my fuel tank? or the gearbox oil itself? Thanks

The 02A gear change is notoriously tripe,  change the gearbox oil to start with. This said,  second hand gearboxs are cheap anyway if you think its tw@tted.

Don't use cheap gearbox oil though, i had a crunchy gearbox and i was told new oil would help but it made it worse and ended buying a recon one off ebay

ye I've seen this happen before, where we've changed gearbox oil and it's made it alot more worse than it already was and i'm sure I've read somehere that old oil is good for gearbox, sometimes renewing oil is not always effective?
