few teasing issues
« on: 06 January 2013, 23:10 »
1st off my temp guage dont seem to be working, ever since i changed all 3 of the senors on the dizzy side of the engine, does it matter what wire goes on what plug? as heard they all do the same job,and place got sensors from the book says they are all the same,

2nd is the car cuts out on and off, ok on short runs, but went from draycott to matlock yesterday and got as far as duffield and kept cutting out, turn the key off and back on and starts again,

could this all have somethink to do with the temp senors ive fitted,

It does matter, The black sensor is for the temp guage and the blue one is for the ecu. Turn the ignition on and put a shorting wire across one of the plugs The temperature guage will go full scale on one of the plugs. Put that plug onto the black sensor,

I was talking 8 valve. I think the 16v temperature sensors may be interchangeable. Someone on here will be able to verify this. But that doen't explain why your temperature guage isn't working though. If you short each in turn you will prove the wiring to the guage

I just had this problem on my 89 16v kr
Cutting out could be a number of things,

Common for fuel pump relays! Does the pump prime ok?

Notice any misfiring? Does the rev gauge do anything silly when it cuts out?

My problem was that once the engine was warm the car would stutter, backfire and the rev counter would dance around before death! Once the car cooled down it would start and drive no problem.
Eventually diagnosed as faulty hall sensor on distributor affected by heat after changing fuel pump relay and coil.
Bought a re-con Bosch dizzy from VW and seems to be problem solved.

thanks jake for heads up, think got few leads to follow,

it just cuts out, turn the key off and on and away you go, like fueling issue, but had new fuel pump etc, couple years back, will check relay, as got problem with wiper and heater relay, clicking, but got new 1 of them,

should have new throttle body and looking for metering head and all parts for that, go from their,
