Used prices
« on: 06 January 2013, 20:34 »
Just had a look on the net and mk6 gtis are now going for around £14000.
Do you think the prices will plummet once the mk7 arrives ? If so maybe now is time to sell

If they are selling at £14k already I would suggest they have already plummeted and you have little to worry about as the rate of depreciation will dramatically slow over the next 3/4 years of ownership

I've been keeping an eye on prices lately and the pattern I've been seeing is
09 cars basic spec around 14.5k good spec 09-59 around 16k
11-12 non ed35 still in the 20k+ bracket
Can't see the prices dropping much more than that even when the mk7 comes out ?
Mk6 Gti Gone but not forgtten

Going from previous Golf history and as someone who changes car every couple of years it won't be the mk6 that gets hit the hardest when the mk7 comes in as they look remarkably similar and you can get some excellent deals at the moment on mk6s. It will be the mk5 that starts to look really dated and as the mk6 becomes more affordable the mk5 will drop slowly away pushing the mk4s into banger territory (obviously R models and Anniversary models don't quite follow the same as they have their own following). So yes, they'll drop but demand for Golfs always outstrips supply so you won't have too many issues yet.

Mk6 prices have already tumbled in the last 6-9 months due to as Exonian said great deals on the run out new mk6 cars.

Your car is worth £14k+ retail price to someone but trade in would be probably £2k less

I never understand the reasoning behind having to sell a car in case trade in values drop.

The car you have will loose much less money than a new car that you will have to add a considerable chunk of money too to own. If it's all about having the latest model on the drive for the neighbours to see, then I suppose it has to be considered, but I didn't think that people who drove VW's were that shallow.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Totally agree....  but its that itch to buy a new car that gets people pondering about selling when a new model comes out.

My thoughts are the car is an 09 plate so it will be 4 years old soon.
I am not wanting a new model to impress anyone apart from me and my wife.
I feel I want a newer car so should I sell sooner rather than later so I don't loose to much

I think your best bet is to decide on which car you want and then keep an eye out for good deals onthe car you are buying.

Yours might be +/- £500 in that time but you could literally save £'000s on the one you are buying, outweighing any hit on your current car.
