RWD isnt worth it in my opinion, it would be too costly! Better option (my opinion, just saying) go 4 motion with a haldex controller.

Was toying with the idea with a friend, found out what is required, tt (180bhp or 225bhp) quattro gearbox and v6 4 motion, rear axle, haldex unit, wiring, fuel tank and floor cut up a bit to accomodate it!

But then again, anything under 350bhp ish, dosnt need haldex, just a decent LSD.

I would just use an Audi a4 fwd gearbox and just mount it in the rear with 2" tubular construction to double as a rear subframe from which tubular rear wishbones can be mounted on heim joints.

The a4 gearbox would be perfect for the job, longitudinal layout, ease of fitment, ideal weight distribution, equal length driveshafts, minimal transmission loss, direct bolt on and readily available without the need of messing about with a haldex system.

I was planning to go down this route and this was my initial plan but I still struggle to justify it...

definately worth upgrades instead! K04 or K04 hybrid and injectors can get you about 300bhp, and it aint that expensive of a change!

I think the only RWD VAG car was the the original beetle, or the bently continental gt mulsanne. So you could have serious issues finding a donor transmission. Would prob be easier going the 4motion route. The amount of work it would take to do this is insane, especially keeping your engine transversaly mounted.

No no no.. Have a play on Google, plenty of other RWD drive VAG cars from the past and present out there.  Maybe not suitable for something like this but there are more than just the beetle.
