Clutch Pedal on Mk2
« on: 21 July 2005, 21:59 »
Hi guys, my clutch seems to have an extremely high biting point, just wondered if the pedal on a 1990 Driver is of the automatic adjusting type or not.
If it is automaticly adjusted is there any way of manualy setting it up or is the clutch coming to the end of it's life?
Ta,
Matt.

I've just recently had to change my clutch on my 1990 gti 16v.
the clutch bite was right at the top of the travel, and made a clicking feeling when pushing the pedal.
it also slipped randomly in the higher gears and felt very dodgy on hill starts.
Apparently the cables can be both manual and auto adjust (but don;t quote me!). mine is currently auto adjust cable (£30 from VW), with a new VW clutch fitted for £250.

hope this helps- I'm sure someone will give you the definitive answer soon!!!

Hi I have exactly the same problem in my mk2 golf 1.6 driver. Biting poin is really high. Hill starts are horrible to do. It is not slippin at high speeds yet. I deffo know mine is a self adjusting clutch and there is nothin you can do.

Buy a manual cable ASAP the self adjusting ones are pants and stop self adjusting ;)
You can tel the self adjusting type by eye, they have a big black gaitory thing and are chunky.  Manual ones are white & skinny, you adjust em by loosening a locknut and twisting the bottom.

Edit, you can get either manual or auto cables on a MK2, the fitment is the same!
