DSG and paddles

Hi

I'm thinking of buying a GTI ( or a Honda S2000 but thats another story) and because I can't wait, I've rang around a few dealers and one of the cars I've found seems to have a good spec, leather, dsg 18" ALLOYS etc , but no flappy paddles to change gear.

Whats people who have a DSG boxes view on this?

Also should I buy one with DSG, I've never driven a Golf with it, but have driven A3's and TT (both have paddles as standard) and thought it was great.

Haven't got my GTI yet, but decided against "paddles".

I ran an A4 multitronic with paddles/buttons for 3 years.  Rarely used them!  If I wanted to stick in manual mode continuously, you needed to physically move the shift lever anyway otherwise the gearbox defaults back to D after c. 20 seconds of non-use.

On the A4 is was quite easily to accidentally hit the buttons as well!

I guess similar issues arise on the Golf?

Personally speaking, I think they're a clever bit of marketing:-
a) it's gets a "manual" driver to consider an "auto" (+£Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£)
b) it's yet another way of getting extra money from a consumer (+£)

I have a DSG with the paddle shift and I would definitely go for it if you are willing to spend the extra.

When you are on the twisty stuff I find it really handy plus the shift is unbelievably quick. You will find you hardly use the gear selector at all when you have the paddles. I find the DSG is definitely worth the money and anyone who has driven the car have agreed, even someone with a manual!! Sorry for sounding like a VW ad but thats how I found it to be.

Also, I would say finding one with paddles ex stock could be tricky, especially if you have to buy the multifunction wheel at the same time.

It would be very difficult by the way to hit the paddles by accident they are quite small and just within reaching distance of your finger tips!!

DSG Seems really good and it is but at the end of the day you'll end up sticking it in drive and you've bought an automatic golf gti which seems to defeat the object altho the DSG is quicker 0-60
