What to look 4 in a Mk2 GTI ?
« on: 08 October 2003, 22:42 »

Hello ,

I'm a GTI newbie and am looking to buy my first one :D

Mk II 's are in my price range (1 - 2K) and seem to have a good rep - so that is what I am aiming for.

Any advice from you guys on what I should be looking for ?
Eg
8V or 16V ?
Any rust traps ?
What type of wheels ?
Most desirable colours ?
Any electrics dodgy ?
Any faults to look out for ?

Cheers lads,

Coolboy

PS I live in the cold NE England so if anyone has one for sale around here let me know.

8V or 16V ?       16V
Any rust traps ? Check Tailgate and around doors
What type of wheels ?  BBS alloys
Most desirable colours ? Oak Green
Any electrics dodgy ?  Not usually
Any faults to look out for ?  Look out for thrashed, smokey engines

How that? hope that helps  :D

I think golfvr6 has pretty well covered things there. The one I stripped at the beginning of this year had bad rust in all the areas mentioned and also the front bulkhead! Also, if it has a factory sunroof, check around the drains.
This'll help you too:-

If you work your way through it, you get to the Mk2 specific guide:-

Personally, I would look for crash damage.

Look for pattern panels. Eg panels that aren't quite right. Every panel should be near perfect in alignment. Look for odd colours, does the bonnet match the wings, do the doors match the roof etc.

Check the rubber seal on the front dorrs where they meet the windscreen. The gap should be continuous. If one end is a smaller gap than the top - bang.

Check the rear panel. Look inside the boot for signs that its been knocked out. Check the 16v badge is in the right place at the rear. (it'll be under the GTI, flush with the I and not the G.)

Check the engine isn't smokey like VR6 said, but check that it engages gears correctly. The gearbox will guide you. If it doesn't, think dark thoughts. Check that there is no play in the gear stick. Check the steering wheel has the right amount of wear for the mileage.

The model to look for in my opinion (and get the insurance quote first):

3 dr 1990-1 16v Mk2 - in either Oak Green, Helios Blue, or Graphite, with 5 spoke flat fronted 15" alloys. The spokes are more like big cut outs. This is the car to get. The interior is three stripe.

(In the above guise the common one is the oak green, and the rocking horse sh!te is a close run thing between the blue and graphite).

Tinman

Thanks Tinman - some great info in there.  :)

An interesting point about the wheels.  Are the 5 spoke Alloys 'standard' - I know that the BBS ones were.  Are there any other alloys that were fitted as 'standard' ?  Also I was looking at a '91 H plate 8V in autotrader that has  steel wheels - did all GTIs come with alloys as standard or did some come with steels ?

Thanks again,

CoolBoy

Yeah, the late 8v had these strange steels with circles i think. quite nice, if you are into steel.

the wheel i'm talking about is more rare than the standard BBS that everyone looks for, which were standard on 16vs. the wheels i'm thinking about have a real edge to them - they look the dogs b0110cks.

they were also fitted to the Corrado in certain trims.

richandhazel may be able to dig out a picture of the wheel i mean. he is our oracle ;-)

Tin

the wheels he means are the Estorils

which can be seen on here

http://www.oxfordshirevwoc.co.uk/wtrwheels.htm

my personal favourites are the BBS RJ's found on some G60 corrado's

Le Castellet

(6 x 14, ET 38) Used on last Scirocco GTX's  191 601 025 F

(6 x 15, ET 35)   357 601 025G

(6? x15, ET33)   191 601 025 T

Now this throws up more questions than answers for me.

Le Castellet was the Campaign alloy. (and the last Rocco, and a few Cabs). But all were 14" (191 601 025F which i'm about to double check).

But what car wore the 6*15 and 6.5*15?

The 6*15 has a 357 part code which is generally G60/Rallye.

Anyone any ideas as I have never seen a 15" Le Castellet?
