Recommend me a TV
« on: 02 January 2013, 22:53 »
Ok, may possibly be getting a TV for my room.

Thinking of 40" or 46", but whatever.

A few things I'm not aware of or need clarification of.

Smart TV - is this any that can connect to the innernet via wifi or LAN? What really are the benefits?

50hz too low? 100hz really betterer? More really even betterer?

Can't go wrong with who, Samsung?

Anything else I ought to consider?

Cheers.

You can't go wrong with Samsung in my opinion... All my tvs are.. But as far as smart tv goes it depends if u use Netflix etc the built in apps are handy especially if you have nothing else to connect to a tv in the bedroom like ps3 pc etc... Size will come down to your room mate as depends how big... I have a 40 inch in my bedroom and its just fine.. As for refresh rate ie 50 or 100 have a wee read of this might explain better than me waffling on http://www.avforums.com/forums/tvs/89219-100hz-vs-50hz-tvs.html

Here is a decent 1 fully loaded http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ue40es6300-full-hd-40-led-3d-tv-12448397-pdt.html

A few diff models there mate will come down to how much your willing to spend at the end of the day if you have any kind of device like a ps3 or 360 or Apple TV or something then I would be just buying a basic model and use the device for the more smart side features as to be fair so far on my samsung es8000 in the living room I have not used to much of the smart features as I find it slow same on my friends lg quite slow interface

At that sort of size, I'd suggest you go and look at a few and decide if you prefer Plasma or LCD/LED.

I get annoyed as hell by the digital artifacts you get on LCDs, especially on the grass when watching footy on the TV...some people seem to pick up on it more easily - I must be one.
But all my LCD TVs do it (Panasonic & Samsung) whereas my Plasmas don't.

Plasmas also have better black levels...so if movies are your thing, maybe that will sway you.

I have Panasonic & Samsung LCD TVs and Panasonic Plasmas...and to me, I'd pick the Panasonic Plasma every time.

You'll know what looks best to your eyes with a quick look though.

All i would say is make sure the speaker are on the front if your not connecting it to a surround sound.. As i had a lg and the speakers were on the bottom facing down and the sound was horrid.... I now have a 42 inch toshiba and it is great.. Amazing sound quality too.

RE the black levels.

I know they suffered from the back light on LCD, but the LED lighting makes blacks blacker and whites whiter.

How close do you sit to the tele?

Go to currys etc and stand a reasonable length away. I was looking at a 46" plasma and all i could see was pixels. In the end i spend abit more on a samsung 5series 46" LED and happy

These 2 teles where side by side for good comparison

I wouldn't have a plasma anyway.

I've thought Samsung as so many I have seen in peoples houses are really good.

However, I've never ever seen any tv from any technological era in any shop display a sharp crisp image - so I've never been able to buy from a 'what I can see' in store basis.

In currys all tv's are turned up to maximum settings, so not really representative.

Also, "LED" is not LED it is LCD with a back light. Only this month has a true LED tv been released and it is from LG.

50 inch plus = plasma.

Also depends on if you have a light or dark room.

Look on HDTV site for reviews.

Just bought a 42" Panasonic Viera Smart TV.
Was going to buy the 40" Samsung but when we went to buy there were 3 options all lined up together,
(plus a 42" LG ) and we chose the Panasonic on picture quality alone.
