Performance clipper?

Right, so i'm fed up with crap performance and crap mpg of my 1.8 pierburg carb'd clipper. I want the car to be a bit quicker, nothing supersonic as I don't really drive too fast. As far as I can see, i got four options,

1) Replace the carb with a weber and use a gti cam
2) Drop a 8v digifant in there (got one kicking around, probably a pain to wire up though)
3) Drop a 16v in there (gotta locate one though. Wirings easier than the digi)
4) Fit a single point injection head, inlet, injector etc from a golf gt mk2 (lhd) i have access too.

I want to improve the mpg as well (get 28mpg at the moment driving like a pussy)
The digifant used to retain 37mpg in the mk2 its currently in.

Opinions?

Replace the carb like Bronze has done, not sure you even need to bother with the cam, it seems to have done the trick on his and be less expensive than the other options. I dont see the point in putting an 8v in as the first option will give you that performance anyway. Then later if you get a 16v, stick that in. 

P.S. 28mpg is really bad though, is the carb setup right at the moment ?

The carb confuses me too much when i look at it! There's a random vacuum hose thats not connected to anything, i believe it should be connected to the idle rest. When i plugged it in the car idled too low and kept stalling. I've replaced the waxstat which made it run a lot better, but still crap. I also cleaned the sender out in the tank. There doesn't appear to be anywhere to adjust the card other than the mixture screw, is this right? I assume the bad consuption is down to it running rich, but surely if i turn this down it will make the performance drop.

Try the mixture screw as you're not going to lose anything because you could just turn it back. I guess pushing too much fuel through can be as detrimental as not pushing enough.
