Mk3 tdi with brake problem
« on: 30 December 2012, 23:41 »
Just wanted to see if anyone on here has come across this problem before on their mk3 before i start replace PITA parts.
Basically at low speeds, i.e parking etc, the brake pedal will almost travel to the floor before engaging any sort of braking force. The car is not losing any fluid visibly from what i have noticed and doesn't do it if you are travelling at any speed. My first though was that the vacuum pipe to the brake servo may be damaged but after inspection it seems ok and holds pressure. The car in question is a 97 tdi with standard brakes other than braided front hoses. The car is lowered quite significantly but this problem has only just started in the last few days and it has been at this height for over a year. My gut feeling is that its something to do with the servo as at higher engine speeds it doesn't happen.

Any insight is appreciated

I would say you have a master cylinder problem.

I would have thought that would affect the brakes all of the time, could be wrong though. I have seen stranger things happen.

Have you had the system bleed through

Well I would start with a proper bleed through and replace the fluid as a first step.

bad fluid or air in the system wouldnt cause it to drop pressure sporadically, it would be constantly bad or spongey. The problem is that it just travels too far but when it bite the pedal is still firm. The car does have drums on the back so maybe could be something hooking up the slave cylinder as a long shot
