As this has already gone way off topic
I found it quite odd the other day that just after I had finished reading a winter photo thread on another forum http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=178631 I came here and noticed this new one started here.

I absolutely get the whole "cars are for driving" thing, but I like to keep one, ok two cars nice and clean and tidy. I keep my cars for years and years, so to me, there won't be anyone getting a 3 year old minter that's done no miles, it'll be me benefiting by not wanting to change because my car is all stone chipped and rusty.

I know it makes no sense what so ever, but it's what my OCD makes me do, so that's it and all about it.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

If I had space for a third car and could fit it in the garage I would love a show queen I can polish and love, unfortunately it's not going to happen until we move again so for now it gets looked after as best I can being used as a daily by my wife.

Couple of 'winter' pics from earlier today...

I get it too. I use to go to car shows especially classic ones with my dad and he hated the trailer queens.
So I got drummed into me cars are to be driven.
But I know from experience a car like the GTI will not get me into work everyday of the year due to the weather up here. So from the 1990s onwards I've always had another car on standby over the winter months.
Sadly over the years we both got carried away with things and ended up with far too many cars.
But I realised after my dad passed away this time last year that if I'm not using them what's the point.
He even said to me why not sell the cars and just buy cardboard cutouts...
This is why I'm cutting my car collection right back to 3.
The mk6 GTI daily, the snow/floods/storms daily, the summer sentimental one.
Cutting down also meens I can sell my workshop/storage unit were the others are kept and use the money to build a double garage at home.

Although I only have the one car which gets driven in all weathers, the reality is that we do get far less snow/bad winters in the south.  Coming originally from Yorkshire, I remember many a very snowy winter up there and totally get why you would switch over to a more rugged vehicle or something less precious, if you live north.

I also understand that if cars are your passion and you are fortunate enough to have more than one, then you will want to keep one in pristine condition, especially if you intend to keep it for a long time.

At the end of the day, people should do what they want with their cars.
