Irratic Idling and power loss

Was taking the mrs up to a friends house last night and noticed while i was waiting in the car the engine seems to be idling rather lumpy. Instead of just sitting just below 1000 revs it seems to be down around 600 revs and the car shakes every so often, sometimes the revs will bounce back up to 8 or 900 and fall below the 600 as if its about to cut out. Took her where she needed to go and arriving there the car just cut out soon as i dipped the clutch, restarted and pulled away, dipped the clutch and it cut out again. Also seems to be a slight loss of power. My engine light is on but its been on since i bought it as its got a full custom exhaust on it. I would provide codes but dont have access to a code reader and im not aware if the mk4 has a blink function by shorting out certain pins on the connector. Anyone got any ideas whats causing my issue and how i can fix it.

take it thats a smoke test for vaccum leak? Another symptom to add sorry was the battery light came on when it cut out those times but there is no loss of power from the battery as it starts the car no problem after cut out.

MAF sensor. Just start the car as normal then unplug the sensor. It's located just after the air box. If this is the same fault as mine it will idle fine straight away. Don't run it unplugged though it will do damage. £121 for exchange at your local dealer. I'm picking mine up tomorrow. Hope this helps?

Nice one i'll give that a try tomorrow. Just my luck its an expensive bit that goes.

Let me know how it goes. You can pick them up from pages, ecp etc but apparently there just refurbished and don't last long.

Give it a clean mate before you fork out for a new one! Search on eBay for maf cleaner, only a few quid and might save you some cash!

I cleaned mine but it only worked for a week. You might be lucky though.

I had a problem with the suction jet pump - cause lumpy idle as I popped out- might be worth taking a look
