re: Soundbars...great if you don't have the room, and a million times better than the speakers you get in flat screen...I still remember when my old sony crt 32" dolby pro logic tv broke, (after a mate and I gave ourselves hernia's removing it,) and I was able to carry my first flat screen (lg 32") in on my own lol ... what came out of the speakers sounded bloody awful! i mean awfl! no bass...depth or anything worth hearing! but at the time a decent sound bar was £250-£300...I was able to buy a second hand sony 6.1 dts amp, plus speakers and a sub and cable for under £200...and it sounded great...so if space isn't an issue...buy an amp and speakers and enjoy real surround sound..just my opinion...

I agree totally.
A proper 5.1 system will always sound better...but I had a full surround set up in another room so made a concious decision not to have cables, speakers and extra pieces of kit in my living room.
Nearly £1000 would have provided a damn fine amp/speaker set up...but the soundbar does a pretty good job of it all things considered.
It needed a decent sub though (or two  ).

As good as a proper set up? No.
But far easier to get 'approval' for in a living room.

This guy does.
That's a crazy setup. Note that it was 4 years ago. I wonder what it looks like now.

Here's an interview with the guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KptVIB1KYpk
Things to note:
* the messy cabling (not shown in the other photos).
* power transformers outside so he gets the cleanest ("NASA-grade" supply)
* $1000 per month electricity bill

Still on my LG 37" LED I bought almost 2 years ago and an XBOX for multimedia (iPlayer, 4OD, 5 demand, NowTV etc). I don't watch a great deal of TV so don't see the point in paying for Sky/Virgin. Still got to mount the TV and XBOX up on the wall now we've moved but CBA

Nothing as fancy at mine.

26" LCD - bought 5 years ago, still working fine, no reason to change it. Don't have any HD sources that "need" a bigger TV.
Sony DVD player
Humax Freeview PVR
Pioneer 5.1 surround amp
Yamaha surround speaker set: small speakers and powered sub.

The space that our TV sits in (between wall and chimney) is very small so you could only fit a 36" tv in there anyway and we'd then have issues of where to put the surround speakers. None of the positioning is ideal though due to the small living room.
I'd love a cinema/tv/music room, but apparently kids need bedrooms.
