Brakes not working properly!
« on: 18 December 2012, 14:37 »
The GTD brakes are just not working properly - sometimes!

Sometimes recently i have had to use excessive force to get the car to slow/stop for turns and junctions  Last week I was doing 60mph and nearly shot past a turn. When I got out of the car at the shop I was turning into, there was a burning rubber smell coming from the front brakes.

My wife moved my car out of the garage at the weekend. She even noticed how bad the Mk6 brakes were compared to her Mk5.

Today I would have to say that they are working fine again :undecided:

The car only has only done 36k. So the pads should be ok? Or does the DGS wear them much faster?

Anyone else experienced intermittent brakes?

(I have done a topic search and cannot find anything Mk6 specific. Sorry if this has been covered before.)

Should the title of this thread be "Brakes not spelled correctly!"

Joking aside, how old is the car, has it had a  brake fluid change? VW recommend the first change at 3 years, then every 2 years after that. Fresh fluid does seem to make a hell of a difference.

I don't think DSG should wear the pad and discs out any sooner than a manual, but that's dependent on your driving style. Traditional autos always used to require more use of the brakes as the torque convertor didn't allow for any engine braking, but that's not the case with DSG. I don't brake anymore in a DSG car than I do driving a manual.

:grin:I was actually going to write " Keyboard not writing correctly "

Sorry, can't really help with the breaks brakes.  Perhaps a sticking caliper ?

Maybe that is why I could not find anything in my search  :embarrassed:

Perhaps a sticking caliper ?

Hmmmm... overheating and brake fade?

A colleague suggested that the brakes could be frozen. :undecided:

Not taking any chances... taking it to the garage.

I have 47K on my manual GTD and I would say the brakes are far from knackered.  I actually think they are quite good brakes.  I would be worried and so driving everywhere with a massive gap slowly and taking it to VW asap, before I ended up in a ditch/tree or worse a coffin.

Please don't think i'm being sarcastic but do either you or your wife rest your left foot on the brake pedal when driving?

Sounds like a sticking caliper to me.
Next time you drive it a bit, after pulling over slowly see if any of the alloys Are warm.
Or jack each of the wheels up one at a time and make sure the wheel rotate freely
Does the car go as well as it did? Has your mpg dropped?

I had very intermittent brakes on mine,
Every time I pressed the brakes the braking point on the pedal would be in a different place, had the fluid changed and bled 3 times and no change,
Fitted a new master cylinder and now they are spot on
Mk6 Gti Gone but not forgtten

The wifes coment made me think originally of what Neil sad or servo pressure issue but the burning smell coment made me think more of a sticking caliper.
