reliability of 20v T engine

New to  VW and golfs. Just wondering how reliable the 1.8 20v T engine from the mk4. As I might be getting a mk2 with this engine. And it would need to be a daily driver not a fragile project car. Also what kinof mpg if its got around 200-220 hp? Current car does 20 if I drive off boost so would like an improvement lol

seriously though, 1.8t in a mk2, shouldnt be too bad as its lighter mk2, if it hasnt been mapped the turbo would kick in about 2.5krevs, stick to changing gears around the 2k mark and get to lower gears asap you should easily see 30+mpg, unless someone can correct me

what do you class as reliable, mine has done 135,000 miles and still going strong, I would class that as reliable
that being said some people have over 200,000 miles and still going
People do say that some variants are better than others though

I do my reliability based on frequency its not running "right" or frequency of breakdown. Not really miles. Although this one has 96k

depends how much you tune it really mate.

In a mk2 golf, a hardware standard 1.8T with a st1 map, around 190bhp, is going to go like sh!t off a shiney shovel, and due to the mk2's much lower weight, I'd imagine you should easily see 40mpg on a run from it.

I used to piss my self laughing in a MKII GTI 8v. With a 20vt you'll have a great time! Is it a K03 or K04 engine? The engines are fine as long as they have been looked after if not they can cause some grief. Also make sure the brakes and suspension have been appropriately improved. I'm jelous my MKII was supposed to be a 20vt project but it didn't happen.

i want to do this...but i love my recaro interior...but a mk2 or even a mk1 is so Retro 

and lets face it, a mk1 with a 1.8t with a miltek 4mo exhaust or turbo back would confused and scare the sh!te out of anyone!

A well tuned and well looked after engine will last many thousands of miles...You just have to be prepared to change the odd sensor or 2.
99% of problems with 1.8T engines is because people dont know their way around them or buy cheap crap parts to replace broken ones.
