Springs snapping

Evening,

A couple of quick questions to pick your brains....

I have, as well as a porsche, a 1.25 fiesta (the mk6 shape).

Parked it up on the roadside at work yesterday morning, all in order. Come back to it in the evening and the N/S/F wheel was sagging low. On inspection it appears the spring had snapped whilst it was sitting still parked up. It was sittin on the shock.

Does this happen or has it been tampered with? What do you think?

Also....

Im going to have to change both springs on the front now, would you re use the old shock or fit a new one? Reason i ask as its Xmas and obviously any money saved is good.

it could have all but snapped as you parked, and then gave up when parked yes.

sticking new springs on should be fine aslong as the shocks arent leaking but you are doing the right thing by changing both front ones

Common as fook on those. Happened to mums fiesta 3 times haha.

Defo replace in a pair, honestly. The other side wont be far behind haha

Shocks will be okay, strut bearings might be cracked though. And carefull the springs not digging in the side of the tyre, had that happen too.

Thanks Chuff and CJA, I knew i had to change the springs in pairs but wasnt sure if would be able to get away with shocks or not.

I will take it all apart and see if its leaking an go from there. Im hoping they are ok as they are £70 each from ECP. Although they do have 25% off atm.

I hope the tyre wasnt hit as they are new a few weeks ago! I havn't been able to have much of a look as been working, its just been towed home by RAC and left there....

No! Thinking about trading on stock market though as a side line.

Although i do drive a porsche, it is merely a 2005 Boxster S. Its not a GT3 although maybe one day!

Very common. Used to do loads. Cannot remember which but there is a certain pattern part which seemed to be far better quality and lasted a lot longer. Just can't remember the brand....

You don't have to replace the pair, they are not made in matching pairs! they are made to a specification that will be well within the tolerances of the manufacturer, so not crucial like replacing shock absorbers for example...
Coil springs snap, because of a simple manufacturing fault, when they are powder coated, they are hung up, a tiny area is missed by the coating in this process, and remains in bare metal, that of course starts to rust, given a few years and some speed humps, the week point snaps

springs wear, putting a new one on one side will definately have one side sitting slightly higher, but you are right, they dont NEED to be done in pairs, but its like tyres, its recommended that you do.

personally id take it as an excuse to fit lowering springs, there usually a better build quality so should last
