Neil, get the GTI back on a track as soon as possible. You'll know you want to keep it then.
M3's aren't all they are cracked up to be and don't ever get one in murderer black, it is horrendous to keep looking clean. 
RWD is fun for sure, but the arse on the M3 is easy to get out of shape and the tyres don't last very long when you do. 
I know john the GTi on track is a truly great car and surprises so many more powerful ones as you go flying past em

I know I would truly miss it especially when the track season starts again properly,

Even so, I would still rather get an indy to do it if it was me.
That's why mine didn't go to the dealers unless I really had to
