wiper stalk query

Had the car for nearly a year now and Theres on thing thats always confuzled me. What does the three way switch on the top of the stalk do?

Sets the length between wipes when the wipers are on intermittent

I like to have minimal length between wipes or it dries and causes clegg nuts  :laugh:
