Sorry to hear about your dad.  As others have said,  these things make us assess our own lives.

I drive mk6 GTI daily and couldn't imagine not doing so.  Do about 200 miles a week, mainly town and rural driving in it.  Yes it gets filthy, but the joy of driving it far outweighs this.   Spent hours cleaning it on Friday and dirty again by Sunday but what the hell, cars are for driving!  When you spend a fair chunk of your time in a car, you might as well be in something you really like.

Can understand you considering the GTD for better mpg though as GTI is quite a thirsty car.  Was filling mine up weekly until recently, now new engine has settled in am getting better mpg, but bought it for the drive not for max economy.

RCD510 DAB is great as is iPod connectivity (though it has it's moments).  I would keep the GTI and enjoy those extra miles.

+1, yes sorry your father is unwell. I agree my GTI's have always been daily drives, school run, commute, shopping and holiday tours of Europe  hence why my previous ED35 had done 13k in 9 months. This is what they have been designed to do and are really easy to live with. Mines gets washed weekly and gets really filthy this time of year but I enjoy making it look like new again every week.

I would keep the GTI as changing it will cost a lot and this is all money towards fuel. Keep enjoying the GTI

Just to echo everyone else's comments sorry to hear about your dad, events like this do us good in keeping a reality check on the important things in life.

Lost my mum nearly 10 years ago through sudden illness and from that point on I vowed to enjoy myself as all the cliches are so true! Our GTi is a daily for my wife and is currently sat on the drive looking very sorry for itself (car not the wife!).

Good luck with your car choices, enjoy

Sorry to hear about your dad. You need to be strong for him and hope things work out for you both.

I lost my dad quite a few years ago and my mother just a few years ago..I look at things different now and enjoy my ED35.

I run the ED daily in all weather conditions and try to keep it clean, however the scottish weather is a nightmare...

Sorry to hear about your dad, wish him all the best and hopefully he recovers as soon as possible.

On the line of motors, I got my Golf GTI a few months back and absolutely love it, unfortunately havent got the funds to run it as a second car but wouldnt want to if im honest.

As for the idea of changing to a rocco, I wouldnt, I love them but didnt even test drive one as I kept banging my head getting in and out of it and they arent anywhere near as practical for daily use.  I also wouldnt go for a GTD after the GTI, my Golf went in to get a scuff fixed from the dealer and the manager leant me his GTD for two days, it was fully kitted with DSG and all sorts.

I was so disappointed with the GTD, in my opinion it lacked the fun of the GTI.  If you change to something you will probably be disappointed, I would say dont bother with the superunleaded and just be easy on the loud pedal and you will see some better economy and keep the enjoyment.

Sorry to hear about your dad Andy, I hope thinks turn out best they can for him and the family.

I'm actually looking at a Golf GTD DSG at the minute, I swapped over to BMW because I wanted fun in the bends but then found myself in a new, exciting job.....at the cost of a 60 mile round trip everyday and while the 1 series is diesel, it's no where near as Eco as the CR vag engines.

When I'm down in Devon at the beginning of next year we will have to meet up, it may just convince me to come back to VW haha.

Take care matey

Sorry to hear about your Dad.  Sometimes these things happen when you least expect them.  I'd not rush into changing a car as it seems to be doing the job well.  Give yourself time given your circumstances....
