Thinking of coming back to the fold
« on: 05 December 2012, 22:56 »
Well guys,

I've been on here a while, had a 2.0tdi 5 door S Golf last time, hen went to an A3 and now have a BMW 1er.
My job circumstances have changed and find myself travelling nearly 2 hours a day on the motorway and the BMW is better built for the twisties rather then long cruising like a VW or Audi :)

So I've been looking at GTDs, my mum had a GTI and I loved it so fancied one myself. I've had the CR170 in the form of a Leon FR before so am familiar with the engine but not so much the GTD.

Is there anything specific I should look out for?
I've seen a candy white 2009 GTD DSG 3 door for just short of £15k with 48k miles on. Is the cambelt 70k on these? What sort of economy do you guys return with the DSG box fitted? I'd prefer manual but the DSG does have me tempted as people seem to enjoy it. I know Craig (the doc) had his mapped to around 210bhp, do the DSG boxes need mapping as well? I was interested in the replica LED headlights from the USA that Kenny had fitted as they look pretty good, I understand he does LED rears now as well? Does anyone have them?

Anything else I should look out for?

Thanks :)

if you can stretch to it get a new one. there are some very good deals on in stock ed35's

the dealers have been phoning round existing customers theyre very keen to get rid of them.

oh and theyre a chain not belt driven cams so no need to worry there (though ive heard of tensioner issues though)

if the car is out of warranty i personally would definitely avoid DSG

the 2011> GTI/GTD comes standard with LED tail lights and LED numberplate lights

Hi Dan

Hope all is well?

There may be some residual stock of the GTDs around - I know my dealer rang me to try and get me to change but the numbers didn't stack up for me.

The GTD will be a better cruiser from an economy persepctive with your journey so the GTD has a lot going for it in that sense - I average around 40-45 town driving and on a motorway run will get the 50s so it does come into its own here.

If you go second hand then personally, I'd go for a one year old (as mine was when I bought it) that way you don't have to worry about the timing belt (IIRC it is still a belt on the GTD and chain on the GTI) and as some are experiencing DSG box issues on thos that are both in warranty and those that are just over 3 year old.

Not sure about the LED lights but you could go for the LED rears - they appear on here quite regularly - I bought mine from Danski not long ago and they look

There is a 60 plate GTD in black at my local independent and he has it up for just over £18k so that's a good starting point. Another option is to give Lee (evo1986) a call to see what options he can come up with?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yes all is well thanks Adrian, yourself?

Well if I go for one over 3 years I'd make sure it's from a dealer so it has a years warranty. The cambelt isn't an issue, considering its around £300 to get changed at an Indy, that's what I pay to service my BMW! Haha

I think I'd prefer the manual, no mechatronic issues then :) I'm just looking to try and find one with the right spec. What sort of apr deals are they doing on these surplus GTDs? It'd be nice to have a new car but not sure if I can afford it at the minute.

All is good thanks Dan

Good point re buying from a dealer - sometimes that warranty piece of mind is worth it and more.

If I had my time again I think I'd go for a DSG box - I'd have to really test drive it with a diesel to make sure it drove well.

I think the APR was around the 7 to 8% mark last time I looked but it is the discounts that will make the deal - if you take their finance you get i think £2k discount automatically then all you do is cancel that in 14 days of purchase using your own finance package or cash from the bank.

This is the one I've seen. Dealer has said it's had one 'lady' owner to which I don't doubt them but I'm jubious that its been driven around town and we all no that's no good for dpfs!

I think I may have to see this one and see what I think, I've had a DSG before in my Ibiza Cupra but it was the dry 7 speed and was clunky as hell so hoping for better with the wet box.

The only downside to that white one is no leather but does have heated seats. I'd obviously get some darkline LED rears and have a look at the replica xenons from the USA :) then visit my man Craig and get her mapped for extra fuel economy.

Is it the thought of the lady owner?

I'm not jubious as it's missing a couple of doors

The Vancouvers are the best alloys on the GTD

Don't worry about it being cloth - the black and white check really looks good in the cabin

Dynaudio and heated seats are two good extras which I'd have over leather any day.
