Car is in bits in a garage and need gearbox to get it back!

So, the story goes, took car to our usual meet on the Sunday and it drove fine etc. Took it out the Monday evening and the clutch was slipping like crazy and couldnt get over 2,000rpm. Anyway after a little poking around with clutch cables and auto adjusters blah blah the smell of gearbox oil was strong and low and behold a quick check underneath revealed a drip from the flywheel housing.

I drove it to Mr Clutch in Manchester this morning, everything fine apart from slipping clutch. I was told a new clutch and a seal would sort it out.

They called me back a few hours later to say the mount onto the subframe was cracked and also the box had something wrong with it!! 

So long story short I'm racking my brains out on options of how to
a) find and buy a gearbox
b) get it to the garage without another vehicle of my own
c) do it all whilst timeframe is sh!te!

SO anyone out there with a gearbox for a 1995 mk3 Golf Gti 8v PLEASE get in touch asap or please advise me any places you know that might have some gearboxes. Ive tried....maybe you can help??

Sounds fishy to me....

Don't understand the mount being cracked, maybe they mean the arm which bolts up to the GB mount
Either way a mount is £15 and the arm can be had from a scrappy for less.
They also need to quantify what the "something" is that is wrong with the gearbox.

I was gunna say, take someone who knows what they are looking at...then tell Clutch-o to put the car back together and you'll sort it yourself! The car made it there fine....

Yeah, well the phone call originally said that the gearbox casing was cracked. Then 1 minute later got a phone call back saying there was a mis-communication between him and guy working on it.
 So yeah as VW Bush said, its not the mount thats cracked it was the arm that joins to the subframe?? Does this make sense. I dont know my way around transmission that much.

If I get them to fit a new seal and clutch and replace the mount for now and stick gearbox back in does this sound the best idea? And then when I get a new gearbox get someone to put it in for me??

The whole Mr Clutch thing was because they sent me back the cheapest quote for clutch repair...they're a nationwide autocentre type place, not some little back street dude called 'Mr Clutch' next door to 'Mr Chips' and 'Mr Beerhouse' 

But does it sound like they've screwed it taking it out??

I have a Mr Clutch a few miles from me aswell...that's where my bad reviews have come from...they seem to be like Halfords...no idea and make money from it!

Why a new box? Sounds like it's just a seal and possibly a new mount needed?

Ah right ok. Bad decision on my part then. I'm not sure why the box is suddenly no good. Was a bit pissed off when he told me so forgot what he said, plus he was a bit vague I suppose. Will give him another call in the morning and hopefully they will have thought ahead and ordered the seal. I've sourced a mount from a breakers unit over the road from them.

So wwould you recommend using the old box with a new clutch, seal and mount? At least for now while I source another box...

If the box was fine before it went in, providing they haven't managed to cock it up, it should be fine when you pick it up...

Can anyone tell me though. I have been offered a box from a Mk2 GTi....been told its the same. Anything I should make sure of?

I'm not sure, but as far as I know, you will have to run the mk2 flywheel along with the gearbox and clutch for it to work, but like I said I'm not sure, wait for someone pro to confirm this though, don't take my word for it.

Mr Clutch are the kwikfit-esque tossers of the transmission world - Do not use them! i made this mistake about 4 years ago on an 8v I had because they were the cheapest and i ended up taking the car back three times due to shoddy workmanship and dire parts used.
