cheap ISV's opinions please
« on: 01 December 2012, 13:54 »
Hi all

New to the forum, i own a 1988 gti 8v. I have only had post 90's gti's in the past and was a little suprised to see it seemed to have a different set-up to my others. It has a white screw in temperature sensor as opposed to a blue push in like all my others, is she still a digi? or an earlier variation?

Anyhow the main reason for my post is it idles at 2000rpm, disconnect the ISV and she idles beautiful, have replaced the white screw in temperature sensor and checked all air/vacuum lines and both throttle switches, all are fine. So it looks like im going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new ISV or leave it disconnected.  Anyone removed theres from the system? any effect on power etc....?  The other option obviously is just buy another, i have noticed the following company selling them for £34.99 on ebay. i know the usual saying buy cheap, buy twice so wondering if anyone has fitted these and have an opinion on them?

thanks in advance.

Don't know about the quality of these ones but OE from VW is a snip at over £300 - gulp. So aftermarket unless you have very deep pockets.

first off take off the isv and clean it with either petrol or carb cleaner, until the fluid is running out clear, then allow it to dry and refit and see if it idles ok, it could also be the isv relay behind dashboard, the relay went on mine and caused the high idle,
usually cleaning isv will cure the problem. you have kjet not digi

If its same as a digi isv then just go rob one off a mk3 golf up scrappy.
I have a perfect one here but it's on Isle of Wight.

Airflowproducts on ebay sell them, decent enough quality. To be honest I would try cleaning your first one with carb cleaner before doing anything else.
