Aircon pump is on a clutch pulley, if not in use then it doesn't have much drag. It is not noticeable if you get rid of it. For a noticeable gain you really have to remove a lot more.

Looking for such gains is completely pointless on a road car, if you're that desperate, you ought to be looking at a different car.

op might be lookin to build a track car. It is a good question - certainly one that's not been touched on too often on the forum.

A lot of the time these changes are done to the car not purely for power gains but because they no longer serve any purpose or it's done as part of weight reduction. In which case it's all or nothing. The effects are profound.

op might be lookin to build a track car.

Then  he should look for something that weighs less than the earth...

in all seriousness though, you wouldnt notice any difference in the power from the air con tbh

To each their own I guess, but the MK4 can do fine when put on a diet.

On topic though, I was talking to Romain Levesque about his dyno and mapping in general and some how we did speak about back to back results in terms of parasitic drag he measured back to back on his dyno, I think the aircon sapped around 2bhp when off, ~8-12bhp when on, although it wasn't much it was reproducible.

If this is anything to go by, I have seen excellent fuel consumption by having made a series of alterations to my 1.6/1.8t mk4:

I've removed the aircon pump, condenser, and all engine bay pipes from mine.

Just replaced the aux belt with one from a non aircon car. fair bit of weight saved, over 15kg I believe

That's a lot of work for 'never needed'.

I see you're in Bristol, does it not get hot there during the summer?

Where I am it's very hot in the spring and I use my air con if I don't want the windows open on NSL roads due to noise and turbulent air.

I should point out that I've not just removed the air-con and magically got 50+ mpg average, the car weighs in at 1120kg
