Edition 35 clutch / flywheel noise

Hi everyone
Have had my carbon grey 3dr edition 35 since March this year with no problems apart from a constant 'knocking' noise from clutch, flywheel, engine area when holding the car on the clutch on any road incline.
The noise has been their since day one but I dismissed it at first due to the excitement of a new GTi and probably expecting it to go away when the mileage built up.
But with 7000 miles on the clock now it is really not right and I feel their is a problem up front, the 'knocking' can sometimes be felt through the clutch pedal in the form of a constant vibration.
During normal driving there is no problem only when putting the clutch under load on an incline or sometimes when stop / start driving in traffic jams.

Finally got the car booked in today at local VW dealer and the verdict, this comment below is straight from the master technician who test drove the car for 17 miles on various roads and inclines.

He admits their is a 'knocking' in the region of clutch / flywheel area but this is perfectly normal on this car, he informed me that he took out several other GTi,s and a Golf R today to check them aswell and that all have the 'knocking' exactly the same as mine??
There is nothing that can be done and I will just have to live with it.

When I picked the car up this evening I asked to take out the GTis and the Golf R that the technician used but was told they all been sold today and I was not allowed to drive them.....surprise, surprise.
I am gobsmacked with the outcome and am not happy at all, the car is my first GTi but px my 2008 R32  in March to get the Edition 35.
The R32 had a clutch as smooth a silk and I was expecting the same......seems not.

My question is do other members on the forum is do any of you have this noise, as I said you will need to hold the car on the clutch on any road incline to check it out.

Any feedback welcome as if it cannot be fixed the 'for sale' sign will be in the window very soon.

thats not right and theyre trying to fob you off

the dual mass flywheel on these is prone to give problems and that sounds like whats wrong with yours.

your within your rights to insist on a test drive of another car to compare it and i wouldnt take no for an answer to be honest.

Try another dealer. Preferably one that has a demonstrator or a few for sale so you can then go out in them for comparison.

Or phone the garage you took the car to be seen at and tell them you are interested in a couple of the cars the master technician said were sold. If they say they are available go in as a new customer for a test drive.

I have something similar in my new A1 where the turbo resonates through the clutch when changing gear. You can actually hear it over the music. Master technician says it is a characteristic of the car but did admit it felt abnormal.

I've also been told if you are getting nowhere, they hate if you post on their Facebook site or twitter site and find they are on you like a rash to help get it sorted!!

I realise there is a problem and will be at dealer early next week to take out another GTi or R, the technician said that he can hear and feel the knocking / vibration but with so much going on when clutch is under load the knocking is just vibrations resonating from various components within the engine and getting transmitted through the clutch :0

Will keep everyone updated on my progress, only good thing is I am very friendly with salesman who sold me the car and he takes no prisoners if a customer is not getting a fair deal from service department.
Am expecting fireworks next week.

i was friendly with the salesman until they damaged my car and now he wont even look at me

i just go straight to the brand manager whenever i need to deal with them now. i don't get any joy from the other staff so just go to the main bloke

ask for the dealers brand manager and just get stuck into him. the master technician has no right to be dealing with you in the first place. thats what workshop/service managers are for and with the car being so new the salesman should be helping you out too.

Why is it so hard these days for dealers to do their job and identifiy and sort out faults.

After my recent problems, i ended up telling them what the problem was after finding it out on here. dealers Pi** me off so much at the minute, if you dont get it sorted now you will end up with major problems when your warranty runs out.

Dealer master technition, i dont know where they get that title from as most of them dont know there way around an engine on the best of days.

Well thats the end of my rant.

SVE170, as mentioned already, they're fobbing you off, this is simply not good enough. I don't know who the dealer is but they aren't acting in a proper manner. My previous GTI [recently traded in for an R] was manual and the clutch was silky smooth with no knocking whatsoever. I'm incredulous that they can tell you it's normal to have a knock from the clutch  VW would not be happy if they knew you were being told this.

It started at the end of the 80s. When they started to he called Technicians, we noticed it at our familys Subaru and Isuzu dealerships. I use to stand at the workshop door and knew what the issue was simply by the l sound due to experience and growing up in garages surrounded by mechanics,  or a bit of fault finding after getting a bit closer. They did not a teenager relative of the MD doing that LOL. It's because if it was not on the course or in the book or computer says no, they don't know. They do it as a job not a passion or want to learn. It's funny as it use to be such a poor paid job too sono one did it unless they had a passion or enjoyed it now they do it as the moneys not bad. A local dealer even employs all the wafes and strays throwen out of schools and train them up.

Hi everyone
It's took a while but an update on my ongoing clutch / flywheel noises on my Ed35, after many weeks trying to get a test drive in an available Ed35.......impossible up here in Scotland as they sell the day they arrive at the dealer, my local VW dealer and the one I bought the car from has decided to replace the clutch and flywheel this week.
Must admit the service manager has been helpful on this and offered the replacements to see if we can bottom out the noise / vibration issue.
So fingers crossed on Tuesday and hopefully it will be good news for me.

Glad to hear your getting it sorted....had mine for 12,000miles and no noise yet...
