MK3 GTi Issues after engine out....!
« on: 27 November 2012, 16:48 »
Hi Guys
Hope someone can offer some advice...

I have a 1998 Golf GTi 8v. I have owned it for a few years and it has been great. Second gear was becoming more and more problematic and it needed a timing belt etc.

I decided to remove the engine and gearbox, send the box for a refurb and whilst the engine is out I would do the clutch, timing belt etc.

I dropped the engine back in yesterday and most is back together apart from the front bumper and all lights at the front.

I started it for the first time today and apart from the water pump belt slipping and squalling badly at idle it did not sound too bad.
I will have a look at tightening the belt tomorrow.

The problems I noticed were (they may be linked):

At idle the engine sounded OK but if I manually added throttle (turning the cable housing itself) there is a ticking noise coming from what sounds like the bellhousing/right side of the engine. If you imagine you putting a nut in the washing machine, on full spin you would not hear it but as the drum slowed down you would hear the nut hitting metal. This is the only way I could describe the sound.

The other fault was that after a minute of running the oil light came and and was beeping. Now I think this is the low engine oil pressure warning. If the pressure was too low could the noise be a tappet??

I did add some more oil but had to leave for work so could not try it to see if it made a difference. When I put the oil switch back on by above the oil filter it broke in that the rubber boot top part pulled of the metal contact screw section. I pushed it back on but maybe I need to replace the switch.

Do you think that the fact there is the noise and the warning light that it would definitely be an oil pressure fault?? If so what fault as it was perfect before I took it all apart...

Could the noise on the other hand be the exhaust where it meets the manifold as I know these can make ticking noises?

Any advice and help is very much appreciated!

Hi
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have put 1 litre of oil in it and will put another litre tomorrow.
The car is up on stands and so has not been moved.

What on the gearbox side though with the car in neutral would be spinning/moving that could show any signs/noises??

If In gear I would agree that the 'box' comes into the equation, but in neutral?

Sorry my mechanical knowledge is not great.

Cheers

1ltr of oil is nowhere near enough in the gearbox, as for the oil pressure light, recheck the oil level on flat ground as a first step.
