thats not too bad

proper frenching was flushing it (EG relocating numberplate to bumper) which looks absolutely terrible IMO

Likewise, that's a really nice motor tbf and it's the completely flushed boots on mk2's ans 3's that look utter sh!te.

The blue Mk3 tailgate is nothing more than "Recessed" or "Tunneled" and has been executed with very little imagination... the misinformed would say its been "Frenched" its not.
"Frenching" is to recess a headlight or taillight in a shape that resembles the collar of a shirt... ie, the lamp would be where your neck would be!
A tailgate that has had No plate recess removed, and perhaps swage lines ironed out, has simply been "Smoothed" or "Decked" this is definitely not "Frenching"

I'm afraid many people refer to smooth tailgates as frenched

i never used to personally and do regard it as smoothed, but was a big thing about it in the magazines in the 90's, (think it was max flower) the french claimed they were the first to do it hence why some call it that

Golf 4 was not available when the mod was taking place.. Was mid 90's and huge in France

I was joking, but never mind, eh?  You're talking about smoothing a bootlid, numbnuts.

If you search for 'frenched' on E38 you'll find lots of numberplates on bootlids without the trim and pushbutton above them.  Startlingly E38 agrees with me, but you're great at arguing black is white, so get going - I can hardly wait for your terrible explanation .

Still interested to see an example of Thom's take on it.

Tbh and as much a shock it may be I agree with you
I just know some folks regarded smoothing of tailgates to the term "frenched"
 
I have no idea what he was on a lot tho and comparisons to collars on shirts
