Other half of ABS sensor broken
« on: 25 November 2012, 08:54 »
There is a very good National Tyres where I live and so I go back for all the car's basic work i.e. tyres, break pads and the like.

On the way to work, the 'check break pad sensor' came on my dash. Thinking 'hm, I only bought some new ones the other week', I went back to National and asked them to check it out. The guy put it up and had a gander. Turns out, there's a lead which comes from the engine, around the wheel arch and splits off into two - one to the ABS and the other acts as a break pad sensor. The end, after it veers off, to the break pad sensor is apparently knackered. The guy has no idea how that may have happened but basically said he can't fix it as the end which is broken, would require the entire wire to be replaced.

So, after weeks of staring at this light and knowing that there is plenty of other stuff I could be paying for at the moment, I have two options. Get a quote from VW for the wire (I imagine pence?) and labour (I imagine my left kidney) to replace it, or short it.

Can anyone offer some opinions on this? How much do you think VW will charge? Are there any dangers to shorting it - other than pro-actively checking the pads, rather than relying on a sensor?

Two options if you don't want to buy a new harness:
1) Short the brake pad wear sensor connection to turn off the light (ghetto fix) or
2) Get someone with a vcds cable to turn off the brake pad wear sensor

You don't really need the brake pad wear sensor and it's better to visually check the wear on the pads at regular intervals.

Patch in the new wire to the old with snips, a knife, solder and heat shrink.
Currently digging a bunker.
