Coolant Worries
« on: 22 November 2012, 16:57 »
Hi guys

A while back I posted a thread about my coolant level that keeps on dropping. Anyway when I had it serviced by Dan Taber Services (great indy garage near me, recomended by this site) a while back I asked him to check it out and he said he couldn’t find any problems. Well yesterday I had a quick look under the bonnet and the level was well below the low mark. It was so low infact, that I was really shocked that the coolant level warning light hadn’t come on. Anyway I have a bottle of coolant I purchased from VW at home so I topped it up. My only worry is that it must be leaking somewhere, but if someone who is highly recommended by this site (Dan) can’t find a fault, will any of the technicians at the stealers be able to find anything?

Also are there any known weak spots on the coolant system that I could flag up when I take the car in for a service (due now) or is there any other reason besides a leaky system that could cause the drop in coolant?

Please any help or advice is greatly appreciated, I am getting very worried.

Thanks

Dave

I'd stare at the engine while using a good torch.  You might just spot where the water is leaking out.  That's assuming your exhaust is not blowing clouds of white vapour.

AlanD had a similar problem a couple of years back. It was a flange somewhere which was leaking

Have a search for his thread

I had exactly the same problem. I presumed the leak was after the sensor, hence the light not coming on.

As you stare at the engine bay, my leak was located just to the right hand side above the cam chain and tensioner. A jubilee   clip and been done up too tight and caused the pipework to split, as it is brittle anyway.

A new bit of pipe, a new jubilee clip, a new dose of anti-freeze and £15 later and all was sorted.

Mines doing something similar, very slowly goes from max to below min. Had it pressure tested, but VW said the system  was fine, and the only other bit it could be was the water pump. After the test though, the leak seemed to stop.... until recently.

Due a cambelt, so getting the pump done too, hopefully this will sort it!

My coolant leak was after the sensor so the light never came on. It's a pretty easy job to diagnose, as I said in a previous post I got mine sorted in 20 minutes and it cost £15.

My warning signal came on this week although oddly the level was half way between max and min. I've topped it up and it's been fine the last few days. Put it down to the cold weather but will keep an eye on it. Have a bottle of the VW top up antifreeze in the boot just in case.

Just updated to say no change in my fluid level since I topped it up.
