Price of new Golf GTi (Mk 6)
« on: 22 November 2012, 15:38 »
What price should I aim to pay a dealer for a new, on the road, Golf GTi Mk6, with:
   2.0 petrol, manual
   5 doors
   Metallic / pearlescent paint,
   leather seats

It seems to be one of the last ones about (so I'm told) but its value will take a big hit when the new one comes out......

Thanks in advance

You get £2000 dealer contribution so in effect are getting £2k off the list price.

Not sure why its value will take a big hit when the new one comes out!!

Not sure what the actual ££ is but I would look at a 10% discount.

It is always difficult to say as it depends on so many factors
- is it unregistered
- are you trading-in
- does the dealer need the end of month sale
- does the dealer want to sell the car quickly

etc etc.

I would offer what you think the car is worth to you based on all of your thoughts re prices in the Mk7 world and go there as a starting point.

p3asa - I'd say that the depreciation on a GTI will drop slightly more once the Mk7 is out - this is the trend in the market when a replacement comes out - if it was an Ed35 then I think it'll be different as it is not directly comparable

Always be cheeky when asking for a discount and always ask for more than you think they can give. Usually goes as a negotiation starting point. If you ask for 10% you may end up with 7%. If you ask for 20% you may end up with 14%.

Personally if I were going for a new MKVI I'd be looking at 20% discount to knock the VAT off as a starting point, with hopes of achieving near that.

The new Vauxhall Insignia VXR has just come out at £30k and the old shape is now discounted to the tune of almost £6K off the list price, so that is 20% right there in the same kind of scenario.

Interesting. I asked a similar question when I was looking to change my car and the general consensus was the price wouldn't drop by any more than natural depreciation

^It's always a bit of an unknown quantity but I've always seen prices soften on previous models when a new one is launched (an available - i.e. no delays like the MkVI had)

I know when the new shape Audi came out mine dropped £2k in trade-in value which hurt a bit.

A three year old car will see less impact than a 61/62 plate as most of the depreciation is already spent and people will often ask why they would buy a, say one year old previous model, when they can buy a brand new one for just a couple of £000 more.

Sooo many factors that its a difficult call but I wouldn't be buying a brand new one now unless I got a hefty discount.

I was just about to post give EVO a call and see what he can do for you.
If I was buying another VW he's the person I will be contacting.

The price will drop for sure, the dealers will give you less in trade-in that's a given IMO. I remember reading an article about the MK5 price when the Mk6 came out and the comment was the the MK5 price was dripping like a stone!

I think the newer cars will take the biggest hit, a 2 month old MK6 GTI or a 2 month old MK7 GTI which one will command the highest price????

That's for sure, he sorted out a great price for a mate on a Touran recently.
