coilover ride when not slammed
« on: 21 November 2012, 14:12 »
hi looking into lowering the mk4 but definately dont want it slammed.

i would consider coilovers so i can finetune the rake but i dont want an overly harsh ride.

am i right to assume that they are still going to be pretty stiff even at say a 40 to 50mm drop?

or do they just get harsh when you start maxing them out?

It's down to the spring rates, the damping (adjustable or fixed), & the effects you get when wound to the extremities.

A subtle drop, slightly higher spring rate than standard & adjustable damping should equal a fantastic ride & a good balance between comfort & handling

There isn't a lot of difference.

It's only harsh when stupid low because they bottom out over bumps.

I can't see cheap coilovers being any better at 50mm instead of 100mm!

As said you need adjustable dampening.

Avoid cheap coilovers

I had my AP coilover set at nomal ride height for a short period at it was as smooth as silk compared to when I dropped it around 50/60mm.

Got to disagree.

When I first fitted my JOMs to my MK4 they were set to about 40/50mm drop. The ride was pretty comfy, nowhere near as bad as I was expecting.

I've now lowered them another 20mm or so and the ride is much worse, quite bouncy & crashy - that extra 20mm made all the difference.

^^This, my mk3 on coilovers was ok with a subtle drop only got really harsh / bouncy when I slammed it.
