Depends what golf you got and year.
Does nothing but change the sound. Pops and bangs that's about it on a standard engine.

Not worth the hassle, you will need the cat for the mot and will gain nothing powerwise.

My cat shot its insides out the back, sounds too loud and pops a lot did notice a small improvement but was with a stainless backbox and a mid silencer delete pipe

See I disagree!
Having spent most of my life driving cars before cat converters were invented and have one car that doesnt have a cat I believe it is most beneficial to remove the cat.

I remember when they came in and either cars engines were upgraded significantly or the power dropped.

Now there are problems, its unlikely you will pass the MOT emmissions test with the decat fitted. The solution will be to keep your cat and swap it before MOT time.

Now as to their effectiveness - no idea really!
Just putting one on a standard car will probably have little or no effect.
With some mods to increase airflow there should be an improvement.

My brother actually did mine over the weekend, he used a MK2 centre box instead of the cat as he had it lying about, although upon fitting realised it was rotten.  I have to pick up some pipe tomorrow for him to have another go.  On first imprssions I would say the car is smoother, haven't noticed any mpg improvement yet, but will see.  He did my 1.4 TDi A2 and I noticed 5mpg straight away and made it punchier too..
