Looking to buy mk6
« on: 19 November 2012, 08:27 »
Hi everyone,

I have just joined the forum as next year I will be looking to change car & I am interested in the mk6 gti. Just wanted to do some research before I buy and find out if there is anything I should look out for when viewing. I will be looking for a 10 plate sub 30k, manual with 18" monzas & audio upgrade. Just wanted to know what are these cars like to live with everyday and do they suffer from any common faults. Any replies much appreciated.

Thanks

John

Have a search for my oil leak thread for photos to look out for as thats getting a common issue.

Issues off the top of my head to look out for when buying.
1 oil leak from crankcase breather as on my thread also from camcover box ( remove engine plastic cover to check.
2 Alarm siren failure
3 Rattle from waste gate rod at around 2-3k revs (fixed with 15 quid clip)
4 Lots of interior rattles.
5 white worm corrosion on 18 inch wheels
6 dual mass fly wheel issues on manual cars.
7 DSG mecatronic unit issues
8 rattling timing chain due to tensioner issues.
9 water pump failure (check coolent level)
10 worn seat bolster and seat frame and foam issues
11 turbo diverter valve failure (listen for chatter on overrun)
12 foglight issues caused by missing plastic covers in the wheelarches.

Don't let that scare you off its just good to know what to look out for when looking imo.

It has to be said that the items in Snoopy's list don't occur all that often. I would have to add road noise caused by saw tooth type rear tyre wear on 18" wheels and certain makes of tyres. Bridgestones and Dunlops seemingly being the worst.

The Mk6 Golf in any shape or form is a bloody good car, and whilst I can't comment on a GTI, from what I can gather they'll do mid 30's mpg, so if that is acceptable to you, I don't see any reason why one shouldn't make a very good daily companion.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Welcome John

When you first test drive a GTI ect keep a listen out for any annoying rattles...I can't personally comment on the interior noises that some on here have had issues with as mine so far has been faultless...

When thinking of what optional extras you want I strongly recommend you find a GTI with Xenons...you will end up kicking yourself if you don't!!

Good luck with search....

Thanks for advice. I thought xenons where standard, good to know. They are a must I have them on my Focus ST3 and could not go back to normal headlights now. I'm hoping I will be able to get 30mpg minimum in the gti as I don't drive particularly hard.

Mine is new and still has under 900 miles and I average 25mpg and I drive it very lightly... It should get better with a few more miles...it bloody better

I have managed about 32mpg a couple of times on a longer run.  On the very first run I got around 37mpg but that was a slooow drive.

One thing for sure, it uses ALOT more fuel than my last mk6 Golf GT 160...........

I've averaged 33 total over the past 2.75 years of ownership 99.9% of thats a 14 mile each way commute. The traffic on the way home kills the mpg as does hitting the 33 sets of lights wrong!
I averaged over 43 on a trip to Scotland and back taking it reasonable easy om A roads 60-70 last year.
When I use my Leon TDI  the same way its only averages 12 mpg more but I drive that more carefully...

Hi there and welcome to the forum. FYI there is a very tidy white mk6 on the cars for sale section of the forum...... Being sold by me
I've not currently got it advertised anywhere else but the OH is keen for me to get rid as we are buying a place together so if the right offer came along I'd be happy to talk. It ticks pretty much all the boxes that you were asking about.

Thanks for all the replies. I will not be ready to start looking until next year. At least now I know what to look out for.
