Starting to lose patience
« on: 16 November 2012, 17:07 »
Hi I recently bought a 1995 Golf GTI 16v. Has been missing, hesitating and generally been driving poorly since a few days after I bought it. It is also lumpy at times on tickover and has had occasions when the revs surge slighty at idle. Its been on the fault reader and it says there is a MAP fault. The Ecu has been sent off and checked professionally and no problems have been found. I have also replaced the dizzy and coil pack. My normal garage has looked at it a few times now and they still can't figure out what it is.

Strange  thing is I have driven a couple of 120 mile round trips. For the 1st 6 or 7 miles it drives like a pig, missing hesitating etc. Suddenlyits as if someone flips a switch and the car starts to drive absolutely brilliantly with no probs at all.

I drive the car or my normal communte to work (8 miles) and it was back to its old tricks!!!!

Any idea why it can do over 100 miles with no probs but struggles on short journeys?

Really starting get frustrated with this now! Please helpppppppppppppp

Sounds like it doesn't like being cold. So start looking at the temp sensors. Do a search on here. There's plenty of info on it.

Also if you thermostat is slow it stays cold for longer

As Tweed say ,  temp sensors and thermostat for starters then check all the breathers and vac hoses for leaks.  It'll be worth giving it a service and cleaning the throttle body and idle stabilisation valve as well whilst you're under there.

It still does it even when it's warm, say after 20-25 minutes, would the temp sensors be at fault if warm. If so where are the temp sensors please? Any idea of cost?

Also check for cracked ht leads, if they get moisture in they can cause these symptoms

Thanks for all the replies. I think I may have solved the problem, . I swapped over the Ecu and fuel pump relays, and it now seems fine. Touch wood it continues.
