Couple of questions
« on: 15 November 2012, 22:32 »
Hi all,

Just recently returned back to the Mk2 GTI world and having purchased a nice 8valve I am just trying to sort out the little niggles and could do with a bit of advice/info if poss

1. Heated rear isn't working - I've checked the fuse, wires on boot hinge and established that there's power on both sides of screen. I'm thinking then that this could be dirty contacts. As such I wanted to rub them down and clean them, only problem is I'm not sure how to remove the plastic tabs that are clipped on to them, don't just want to pull at them as I reckon they're bound to be brittle and snap.

2. Does anyone know where to get a replacement plastic plug for the left hand front wiper hole?

Cheers

Ben

!, If you have power at both plugs, then the plugs are ok! the HRS plug on the right hand side, runs to earth... so most likely it lost its earth connection, causing the screen not to work, although the tailgate is bolted to the body via the hinges, this contact is insufficient to allow electrical systems to operate, so, my money would be on a broken earth wire, where the wire cross over from the body of the car, to the tailgate! Pull the rubber boot back and inspect the wires very carefully, broken wires should be repaired by splicing a new length of wire in, soldering the joints, and heat shrinking to insulate... its highly likely that these wires have already been repaired in the past, and now need doing again! repairing these wires can also sort out self parking of the rear wiper problems etc

2, as above, eBay or the dealers, may still have them... Put a little grease on the pin before fitting, this will allow removal in the future, without it breaking again

HTH

Thanks for the replies guys.
I did have a quick check of the wires Thom but if you reckon it is pointing to this I will have a more thorough check
