Belt service

im looking at changing the fan/alternator belt and powersteering belt but im not sure which parts to buy off ebay. Ive got a 97 p reg 2.0 8v without aircon. Help?

Can't offer much in the way of advice concerning you problem, but just wanted to say I too have a 97 8V GTI and live in Bath, do you know of any local meets etc?

So it seems even suppliers off ebay cant tell me what belts i need as theres too many variations?

Your best going to a local motor factors for them. All you should need is your reg number and they will be able to identify what you need. One will be a large ribbed belt and the other will more than likely be a small 'v' shaped belt. There isn't that many variations to be honest.

If you have not got air con but power steering - then it's really simple as all 8V 1.8 and 2.0 engines on the mk3 have the same belts.....

Alternator belt is a 6PK894 (or 6PK895)
p/s belt is a v-belt 11.5mm x 685mm

Like I said, local motor factors are your best bet for these parts if your unsure what to get.

Yeah i did. They quoted me £87 for the parts and 90 is what the garage who were gonna fit them were quoting me so not worth my time. Also the motor factors didnt know if my car had a manual or sutomatic tensioner. Im going with my garage. They dont charge the earth n r good lads so next monday job done

Don't get a garage to do it, it's really bloody easy! A 1 spanner job in the Haynes manual lol :laugh:
