engine managment

Hi
I have a MK4 GTI 2.0 and seem to have a problem!!!!!!
Driving the other day and the engine management light came on and now it wont go out!!
Obviously this isnt normal.....but any idea what it could mean and is it going to end up costing me mega bucks???

I had this on my 4 Motion, turned out to be one of the vacuum hoses had split. I took mine into the garage and changed me £35 to plug it into the computer to tell me what was wrong. Worth getting done asap just in case it is something that could damage the engine.

Could be a whole host of things, get it checked out with VAG-com

Took it down to the garage today, but the light was no longer on and apparently without the light on, they couldnt do the test!!
But anyway, he tried it just incase and a code come up, but it could of been a couple of things....think it was the coolant thermostat and something else!!
They said take it away and see if the light comes vack on.....and low and behold...guess what???
Yep its back on!!!
So will take it back 2morrow and get them to sort it!!

The code that actually came up was P0116 i think

dont know if this helps but i had the same motor and the engine management light was on all the time
i just ignored it 
didnt do no harm
especially did it when the car wheelspun it was a b1tch
