Exhaust help needed please!!
« on: 12 November 2012, 10:12 »
The exhaust on my '90 digi has fallen apart!!! I don't know much about exhausts and I don't know what a standard exhaust looks like so I would like some help please!!
The pipe that broke was about 19" long and connecting the downpipe to the first of the central silencers as in the photo:

Now I guess it was fitted to replace the catalytic converter at some stage but would it have been custom made or does it look pretty standard and therefore quite easy to get hold of. If readily available, where is the best place to obtain one?
Thanks.

Take that to your local car part supplier and measure it up. I'm sure an original centre silencer section should fit.

The problem is that flange welded on the end. I need something similar to attach the pipe to the other half of the bracket which is on the downpipe. I think my only options are a custom job or maybe something like this assuming the dimensions are correct:
http://www.tsr-performance.com/webshop/parts-by-category/exhausts/jetex/cat-bypass-pipe/vw/golf-mk3-hatch-cabrio/jetex-vw-golf-mk3-hatch-cabrio-cat-bypass-pipe-8-93-11-97-26-cr-2-0l-16v-gti-8-93-11-97/
Depends which would work out the cheaper option.

You may need to the flange off the right side of the pipe in the photo, and get someone to weld it onto a new center pipe for you.

Pretty sure the pipe that hs fallen off was a standard OEM center pipe.

There was no Catalyst on the car ever. Most Mk2s didn't come with one. Very rare to find one as they were an option at extra cost.

Yeah, I now realise it never had a cat, but that pipe in the link is the only pipe I can find with any sort of suitable flange on it. Do you think it would do even if it is supposed to be a "decat pipe"? It's just going to be a hollow pipe anyway isn't it? I'm not sure it would be much more expensive than getting someone to weld the flange onto another pipe!
