Go Pro Footage...
« on: 11 November 2012, 18:23 »
I've already posted this on my thread in the MKV section, but didn't think there was any harm in posting it in the VW section.  I would dearly love to own a Go Pro camera, but I haven't a clue how to use the editing software, so it kinda scares me  :embarrassed:

Anyway here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doplSGL9xNo

It's only a little over six minutes and would appreciate any feedback or comments, on the forum or directly on youtube.

Thanks for reading.

First up you need to sort the format you've used.  It looks like it was filmed wide-screen and then encoded in whatever you used to render that using 4:3 (old school TV format).  The result is that everything looks pinched.

Did you use Windows Movie Maker, or something similar to do the video?  The frame rate looks to be 20FPS which means you're dropping frames out of the GoPro at a rate of 10-40 per second.  You won't get smooth footage until you have probably 30fps, preferably matched source to set up/output on your editing programme.

Next up, I think you used the sealed back.  You should have used the open back on the camera, so we could have heard the motor a bit more.  Even a bit of rain won't be a problem, as the front of the camera is still enclosed! If you were using the open back then put the camera somewhere closer to the engine so we get to hear some engine noise, which would make the video a lot more interesting.

Finally if you have a smart phone that does the same resolution video put it inside the car, viewing your hands on the wheel if you're camera shy, or all of you if you're not.  You can match the timing with the GoPro and use that footage for cutaways, which will make the video a lot more interesting.

Nice road.  Look like it would be dull as sh*t in the summer.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Thanks for the feedback DH. A friend of mine did the editing, I know sweet FA when it comes to that sort of thing. It does look pinched and I was trying to work out how to convert from 4:3 to 16:9 on YouTube but it stumped me, like a rubix cube! I don't own the Go Pro, so didn't have a clue what was going on, all I did was drive. But you're correct in saying the back was sealed. Said friend had only owned the camera for a couple of weeks so was probably being over cautious

I don't have a smartphone either, basically cos I ain't dat smart innit     I do have a decent 16mp camera though, that I could mount to the dash, then you could hear the motor a lot better. Would adhesive backed Velcro work do you think? And if so would it be a thingy to get off again? I love the idea of cutaways though, it would make it more interesting. Sounds like I should send you the footage and you should work your magic on it

The edited footage of six and half minutes was cut down from twenty two minutes in total, so it's not a fantastic representation of what that roads actually like. In reality it's a belter, wet or dry. The only problem when it's dry, is its usually the summer and thus crammed with caravans and nearly deads, making speedy driving somewhat more challenging.

I'll have a bash at recording some footage with just my camera and see where that gets me. I don't have any editing software, so it'll just be motor and wind. But that's all I've got to play with

Nice little drive.....including the oncoming car flashing you haha

As for video - i've yet to use my gopro, although will be this weekend, but the best software i've used for editing is pinnacle/powerlink director. Both allow for the gopro footage to be put at the full rate.

The gopro has various settings on the camera (ie: wide angle vs ""normal""), and tbh unless your looking for a wide anlge shot, i'd stick with the ""normal"" video size - both are HD so you are not loosing any video quality on it. It has been said getting the engine noise in (and I see you have a lovely new exhaust!) so either getting the open back or an external mic would be good (you will need to drill a hole in the side of the case to stick the mic jack in - on mine i've drilled the hole in the open back case as if I need a 100% waterproof one i've still got the fully sealed case). Or you could mount the gopro nearer the back on the side.

Did you use the suction cup and was it on the top of the windscreen??

They're both 16:9 ratio.  The setting you're talking about is the field of view on the camera.

If you're using the suction cup mount get a clip and some lightish weight rope, tie the rope around the mount and put the clip around something inside the car, so if the cup lets go you don't lose the camera!

I'd love to pretend I know what you're talking about, but as previously mentioned the Go Pro isn't mine and I didn't operate the editing software.

Yes the camera was mounted to the top left of the windscreen on a suction pad. It's still there, so if you fancy coming to Devon, I'll burn a tank V Power and we can get some good footage.

Also thanks for noticing the new exhaust. The car sounds absolutely mental now, so I'm desperate to get more footage.  And yes the Beemer flashing me was hilarious, to beef hair I had come round the corner on the wrong side of the road to hit the apex, but I was well out of the way

That be the one! I'm don't do technical speak!! I thought it effected the overall quality but hey.

Funny you say that!! I'm actually down in Exeter on Monday afternoon to Tueday however I fear my visit may not be long enough. My golf is coming with so if you are around I could indeed bring the gopro.....in fact it's coming anyay as I want to get some video! Best roads i've driven on were in Devon/Cornmall - especially going from Newquay to Truro in girlfriends mini cooper s! My golf up for stage 2 start of next year hopefully with the exhaust being the changed asap.

In theory your 16mp camera would work and probably could shot some good video. Thing i'd worry about is the vibration but should work. I've never tried to mount my slr camera but from what a few mates have done, it can do some stunning video.

Check the frame rate on your camera.  If it's 30fps on video you're all good to go.

Buy one of these and use the tripod mount screw to attach it on the inside of the glass:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004GTHAYA/ref=asc_df_B004GTHAYA10543996

You may find it's worth supporting it with something off the bottom to remove any camera shake.

Oh and be careful putting up footage of yourself hooning on Youtube - it's possible to time the car between markers etc if you look like you're taking the p*ss.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
