pressure switches on the oil filterunit
« on: 07 October 2003, 21:33 »
Hi  ;)

There are two pressure switches on the oil filter unit at the front of the engine one behind the other (f reg 16v)

When the wire is pulled off one of them, can't remember which one now (less than helpfull I know) and the engine is run an alarm goes off and a light flashes on the cluster, but not the oil low level light another one.

Does anyone know what the extra pressure switch is for and what the warning buzzer is saying.

The car runs okay without the pressure switch working and the wire earthed

Cheers Steve

The buzzer is there to tell you there is no oil pressure and soon no engine. If it is just the sensor disconnected it will not do any harm, just make an annoying buzzing noise.

The two switches work at different pressures, one is about .5 bar and the other is about 1.5 bar (can't remember exact figures). The higher switch is for low oil pressure above about 2200rpm (through a controll unit) and brings on the buzzer. The higher switch (on my 9A) is after the filter and the lower is pump side, maybe as a bloked filter indicator?. Thats how I understand it,anyone?. Steve.

Hi there,

I have a problem with my Golf. It runs fine until the oil temp gets above 90 degrees and then when the revs are below about 2500 the oil light comes on and the buzzer goes off. I don't think it the oil as the engine would have been dead ages ago but it's getting really annoying.

I have replaced both of the pressure switches and no change.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how to solve it?

Jon

How many miles has it done --- could be low oil pressure Try an oil change possibly a bit thicker oil if high mileage
What does anyone else think

It's done 171,000 miles and i have changed the oil and oil filter at 170,000 but i am using mobile 1.... maybe that is a bit too thin for it?????

i've checked everything else like change the pressure switches and changes the dash... not sure what else it could be?

Mobil 1 is a waste of time in a high milage engine. Unless of course the engine has had it from new, but since Mobil 1 has only been around since the late eighties, the Mk2 engines were never intended to use it.

The damn stuff, although excellent in quality is just not intended for this kind of use, (to thin).

Replace the oil pump, around ?50, or just put Quantum Synta in it, which is a synthetic blend oil, and earth the low pressure switch.

It will also save you a bloody fortune when you come to buy oil.

Jesus, they must have seen you coming............ ' High milage GTI?' ' Oh yeah, have this Mobil 1, It will sort you out lad.........'

  Give me strength...........

 ;)
