Not starting :(
« on: 09 November 2012, 21:56 »
About 2 hours ago I jumped in my car to go home after being at my my old flat getting it ready for the tenants moving in on Monday.

I turned the key, the dials swept - and then nothing happened.  I took the key out and tried again.  Still nothing!
I locked the car with the key, and unlocked it again.  Still nothing.  No engine starting noise - just silence.  I could actually hear the dials sweep!
I have a solid EPC light and a solid Emissions light.  The stereo still works and so do the lights etc - so it's not a battery issue.

A phone call later, and my brother in-law is on his way to pick me up.  During the 10 mins I was waiting I kept trying the key intermittently.  On about the 20th attempt, the car started!  I called my brother in-law and told him the car had started, and I'd let him know how I get on.  The journey is only a couple of minutes.

I drove home and reversed into my driveway.  I took the key out, and immediately put it back in and tried again - it started.  During the journey I had no warning lights.

I've just been outside and tried it again.  It won't start.  My mate has a VagCom I can borrow... but I guess it's just a trip to VW for a warranty repair?  I don't know how I'll get there if it won't start again?!

Any ideas?

I don't have any breakdown cover
I wonder if I keep trying it, whether it'll eventually start again?!

In the morn keep trying it till it starts and then drive it immediately to the dealers for a urgent investigation, it might be wise(if poss) to get someone to follow you just incase...this is all assuming your still in warranty of course..

Hope they can find the cause of the problem mate...

Trying the other key was one of the first things I did.  I remember my old Civic having a faulty immobiliser chip in the key and would only start with one!

I tried a set of jump leads just to eliminate the battery - but they did nothing.  I called my local dealer, who said to get the car to them.  After speaking to my wife I then realised I have breakdown cover included with my bank account. VagCom said there was a fault with the Central Electronics module.

I called Green Flag, and within 20 minutes there was someone at my door.  He tried jump leads also, and then checked the voltages on the starter motor.  He thought the problem was the starter motor - but as the car was under warranty, he called for a tow truck and then left.  Within 45 mins a chap turned up with a truck, and winched the car onto the back of it.  I assume it's at the local VW dealer now.

One thing I did notice yesterday when trying to start it again was that if I pull my light stalk towards me, the dashboard display crashes and reboots itself.

Luckily, my mother in-law has 2 cars and has lent me one for the next few days!

Quality... I called VW this morning to make sure they had got the car.
They won't be able to look at it until Thursday cause they're so busy.
