knocking comes back after bearing replaced

so, as in a previous post, i had a knocking noise from the n/s front!  thought it was the cv joint.  garage reckoned the wheel bearing.  they replaced the bearing and the noise went away.  only for 100 miles though!  now the noise is back!  spoke to the eurocar parts forum.  they say a front wheel bearing can't be packed with grease so he can't have bodged it!  hmm.  i still feel i have been messed around here.  i went back to the garage.  he reckons its the hub carrier that is worn now.  so how come for 90 miles, the car was whisper quite, then the noise slowly comes back?  as an aircraft engineer, if a component that houses a bearing is so worn that it causes a new bearing fitted to create noise, once the bearing is replaced, it will immediately recreate the same knocking noise (not 100 miles later [sorry in this case nautical miles]).  I am thinking that he has realised that it was the cv joint after all, he bodged it, charged me for a replaced front wheel bearing and now wants me to bring the car in for a new hub carrier plus new bearing plus labour!  Is it comman for hub carriers to create this problem with new wheel bearings.  the guys on the eurocarparts forum dont seem to think so.  sorry about the punctuation folks.

You say a new bearing was fine for 100 miles then my first thoughts would be a badly fitted wheel bearing or an inferior part we had the same problem on a friends van but it was more of a wooshing noise on corners.
A clunking noise does seem to point to a CV problem best thing to do is to jack it up and turn the wheel by hand and listen for the clunking, if it does it when you turn and then reverse the wheel kind of rocking it, it's your CV joint, if you can move the wheel to and from the arch away from and towards car it's your balljoints, if it grinds when turned then I'd look at your Wheel bearing and check the seals etc. Its hard to tell without having a look but these might save you another garage trip for the wrong thing alternativley find a VW specialist as they can be  funny buggers Vee Dubs!

cheers man.  i thin i'll have a look soon.  the tax is up at the end of this month so i suppose now is a good time to take her off the road.  that's a point!  if i declare a sorn, does it physically have to be off the road?  i have a garage but she wont fit in.  i have jacked the car up before she went in for the wheel bearing replacement.  i stuck her in gear and took the revs up so she was indicating about 40-50mph on the clock (the speed at which the knocking is loudest) and there was no knock but a grinding noise.  as i understand, there would be no knocking untill a load is placed upon the troubled item.  i think i'll just change the cv anyway, i know its an expensive route playing the elimination game but hey, at least its a tick in the box!  then i can start slamming her and sorting out the cosmetics.  mmmm

Yes the car has to be off the highway for a sorn, my plank of a neighbour reported my gti because i turned it round on the road, which took 30 seconds!!!
