Apple TV, Roku, Other?
« on: 07 November 2012, 13:09 »
I'm looking for a media player that will stream online to my T.V. So far the above two look to be the most popular, however i am struggling to find out what channels/apps are available on the Apple TV. BBC Iplayer, ITV player etc are a must. The interface of the apple tv looks more user friendly than the roku, but really after advice from people that actually own one?
I do own an ipad 2, and an old iphone 3gs, however, streaming content from these devices to my tv is not important to me.
Does anybody have one of the above or maybe even know of another that I should be considering?

Cheers
Dan

Xbox, it's got "apps" you install, like iPlayer, ITV Player, Netflix, Lovefilm, Now TV, Sky etc as well as Xbox Music and Xbox Video too. you can now control the Xbox via your smartphone, which is awesome! Play films from one to the other via Xbox Video & you can use the xbox to browse the internet with Internet Explorer, tap a button and it transfers the page to your mobile for "one the go reading". For me it's just about perfect steaming device and thinking of getting a second for the bed room to replace my PC as a steaming device!

Cheers Jay, I was considering an xbox, but wasn't really wanting to spend that much (wanted to stick to around £100), however, I think that you may have just convinced me!!!
What size hard drive would you recommend?

Which ever you can afford, if you can get the 250Gb, do it, as it'll make thing easier, but if you do decide to go for a 4Gb unit you can upgrade the drive with a ebay jobbie.

I think one of the best features has got to be Internet Explorer on the Xbox the other is the streaming apps, bear in mind you'll need accounts for Netflix/Lovefilm/Now TV etc and a annual xbox Gold membership (£25 from ebay) - you can also pick up cheap games if you want  The great thing is you can also stream stuff from your PC/Laptop if you want!

There is talk of an xbox 720 being released next year or year after, but I think the current xbox is more than capable

Just install XBMC on to your laptop & run Navi-X,

Did this on mine, Connects up to TV Via HDMI lead, I now get Sky Sports, All films & Loads of other channels only cost £8 for the HDMI Lead

I'd assume so, I've not heard of anyone with a new xbox getting the RROD.

I did this for a while and it's not pretty / practical as just picking up a xbox / other media device remote and using it from there. But it is easy / cheap.
