solid engine mounts
« on: 15 July 2005, 16:01 »
Hi all, looking for some help/ advice regarding front engine mounts on my Mk3 1992 8v, (2E), i have read that it is wise to go for a solid front engine mount, one suggestion was to use a couple of ice hockey pucks- hole in the middle- big bolt- you get the picture...
my previous experience has been that true solids are only really for comp' cars as the vibration leads to fracturing and high shock loadings on various parts of the running gear.
is this also the case with my GTi or is it safe to use a true solid mount- on the front at least.

My downpipes are also cracked, which i am lead to believe is a fairly common fault with the Golf, any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

In my all but humble opinion mate i'd just go buy some new standard ones.

I used solid mounts in my mini and it snapped bolts galore even with the solid top engine mounts and solid subframe mounts holding it all together or NOT as it oftern was!

Heavy duty are a wise choice but not solid...  Honestly.

firstly thanks for your post, its nice to see someone has an opinion on the mounts!!
yup, that was sort of my conclusion as well, i had a 1380 mini with solids and it wasn't great for reliability.
I have ended up using a solid rubber mount that i made myself, cut it to the same size as the originals, seems to have made quite a difference in reducing the driveline shunt.
still need to get the downpipes fixed though.
Thanks again 8-}
